Itty Bitty Primitive Pinwheels-Wreath

Here is the wreath.  While Mary, Jean, and I were at The Backdoor quilt shop in Greenwood, IN I saw their sample of this wreath.  So I came home with some red fabric and The Itty Bitty Primitive Pinwheels  pattern and instructions for another itty bitty piece but I made the wreath.  It is so much easier than it looks.  

If you have ever used the Twister this is the same thing only the block you cut is itty bitty not the 5 inch or 10 inch that I have the Twisters for.

I will layer and quilt before Christmas, but this is one more top/UFO that is finished.

And yes, I did have to take out four blocks and rearrange two of those.  But thank goodness the mixed up block was on an outside row.....  I really doubted that I would be able to sew something this small.  If you want to attempt these...you can test your skills with an even smaller one!  Not me.  This was small enough for me.  

Anyway, wanted to show it off.  I am hoping the quilting will make the wreath pop out a little more.  Mostly what I can see at the moment are the pinwheels.  But that is something I do when I have worked on something for a bit....I cannot see the overall effect..I can just see the construction.

According to Wal-Mart we are less than 60 days from Christmas!  The little counter they have at our store's front door is reminding me that I need to get started shopping and wrapping so I am not doing it all at the last minute.  Actually, I am mostly sewing for Christmas again this year.  I have not figured out what everone's gifts are but I have a couple in progress.

 

 

 

Giraffe Quilt Top and Lighthouse Apron

Giraffe quilt is pieced and ready for quilting and adding a name to the black block.  I had just enough of the gold to do the borders and cut binding strips.  More giraffe fabric left so maybe I can add it to a burp cloth to go along with the quilt.  I am not nearly as impressed with this quilt as I was with the one in the shop.  So I guess I should have bought the pattern to get all the details.  I purchased only 1 yard of the gold, 1 yard of the giraffe fabric, and a fat quarter each of the paw print and the black fabric.   

Don't anybody spill the beans to Rita.  She will get this in December at the Christmas party for the camping club which they have hosted for the past two years.  They have a beautiful home that is well equiped to handle a large group and they seem to enjoy hosting.  This will be a small token of our thanks to her.  Bob will get one too...I just have not determined what design should be on his.  The lighthouse trio design is from Embroidery Library and the font is from my Janome 350E.

Giraffe quilt in the making

Jungle buddies too-giraffe from Blank Quilting.

Here is the start of this project.  Giraffe pieces are cut out and just pinned to the background fabric.  Need to figure how and what size I can cut the gold to piece it together.  Then a name can go on the black piece.  But after this point I was done for the day.

Earlier today I added borders to a small charm pack quilt center.

  After I quilt this one I will see if I have the nerve to try scalloping the edges.  That is what I have in mind.  

I have a picture of the first quilt I saw in a catalogue that I wanted before I started quilting.  It has scalloped edges and vines and leaves appliqued in the corners.  I wonder if I would make that quilt if I would suddenly be finished with my quilting quest.  Stranger things have happened, but I doubt that would cure my wild desires to quilt at all hours of the day and night and to try different styles of quilts.

Red, Black, and Panda Quilt

This is the fabric I picked up at a yard sale at the KOA in Middlebury, IN this summer.  I also picked out the green and the black with colored specks at their local quilt store.

Just loved the fabric so here is the quilt that I put together today.  Just had to do something so this is what I came up with.  I kept trimming that green down so it would not be any bolder than necessary.  I was trying to match the green on the panda fabric.

Okay, I must agree it is bold, but if you like red, black, and panda's it is for you.  For the time being it is going to the "to be finished" stack....but if you see it and must have it, I will finish it soon.

How cute is the giraffe? or the cat in the garden?

Here is the fabric from L & L Yard Goods in Madison.  They were just so cute. 

I came out with enough to make one baby quilt.  At least I think I did.  The pattern for the shop sample was in a book and I am really trying not to add books to my library of patterns.  Fabric is from Blank Quilting.

Then RJR has a new line:  Garden Frolic.  Here are the FQs I brought home from that one.  Just couldn't leave the kitties on the shelf.  Pattern to come out the first of the year in a magazine but bet the focus fabrics are gone before then from shops.

I loved the colors in both these lines.  Just what one needed on a bright fall day.  

The drive to Madison was pleasant with all the fall colors in the trees.  Now to get those pieces worked up into a quilt top.

I got to use the quilting machine last night on the purse top and it worked so smoothly I wonder why I procrastinate in sitting down to finish these quilts.  So maybe today I will be able to get the three that are ready to quilt started.  Of course, I need to prepare the backing for them and get the batting out of the box...so maybe Friday will be the real quilting day.  I was using the new thread I purchased at Margie's.  Aurofill and I also had a prefilled bobbin from Superior.  Wonder if that is why the tensions were so smooth last night.  Hum....   I was glad to learn the prefilled bobbin worked good.  I was leary of them but it came with the sample set that came with the Sweet Sixteen machine so I gave it a try.

Still continuing to ask for prayers for Russell B.  Prayers for health.

Sewing today but praying for a dear friend the entire time.

Found the pattern: The Cross Town Carry Maggie's Bag by Marlous Designs, at Margie's Country Store in Madison, IN.  Sandy helped me pick out the fabrics.  I absolutely love the fabrics.  

I had to do some ripping on the sides.  It is one of those things that I can read it 20 times and still need to rip the seams to try another time to make it turn out like the pattern really says.  

It was fairly simple.  Of course I already had the braided handles made from my efforts on Monday evening after I returned home from my shopping trip.  Last night I sewed the outside pieces together.  Today, I quilted the front on my Handiquilter, Sweet Sixteen machine and cut out the lining fabric from a pieced stip of three of the purse fabrics.  Sewed the handles on, made the little ties, and then put it all together.  I am generally not a blue or teal person....but I like this one.  I had to rip some of those first seams out and redo to get the sides of this bag prepared properly.  

All the time I have been sewing this evening I have been praying for Russell, Mary, doctors, and the rest of the family.  Praying for strength, for healing, for doctors to be able to fix these life threatening issues.  I have been praying all day and enlisting more to pray for them.  Please pray for him.  Thank you.

Three quilt stores and sewing all in one day!

Margie's Country Store, Madison; L&L Yard Goods in Madison, and New Frankfort Mercantile at Austin, IN.

Pattern from Margie's and a tool that is priceless when turning tubes that will be used for braiding the handle.

Fabrics for outer purse.  Cut and sewn after returning from shopping.  Love these colors.

Tubes made, turned, and braided.  Ready to attach these as handles.  My very first attempt at braiding.  Jerry held the top while I braided.  Next pair might be a little smoother.

Opps picture is sideways, but it is the interior pocket that is ready to attach.

Part of the fabrics from New Frankfort Mercantile.  More about them tomorrow.  Backing for the round quilt and borders for the super-sized point-on-point squares.

I'll add pictures tomorrow of the animal prints I picked up.  I see a turning twenty or yellow brick road baby quilt out of them.

I will also show the cutest giraffe print and cat print that I got at L&L yesterday on my next post.  Maybe I can get the quilt top done with it.  It is just too cute.

Blueberry Pie Quilt

Heartspun Quilts, Blueberry Pie pattern.  Fabrics all from Margie's Country Store in Madison, IN.  Thanks Margie for picking out the pattern and helping with the fabrics.  

I really had to talk to myself to put the border on this quilt with all those random pieces.  I so wanted to put a single fabric around it...but I am glad I kept following the pattern.  This is the first pieced border I think I have put on a quilt like this.  Now I must go shopping for the backing and the binding.  I don't think I have enough of any of the fabrics left to even make a scrappy binding.

Very happy with how this one has turned out.  Jerry wants it for our bed.  We'll see.

 

 

Super-sized Square-on-point block

These two Super-Sized Square-on-point blocks were made in just a few minutes this evening.  I found the instructions for them in Quiltmaker's September/October Issue.  

Anita Grossman Soloman  makeitsimpler.com  provided the instructions for this simple block. Her most recent book is Rotary Cutting Revolution.The Quiltmakers website gave a handy reference chart to make this point-on-point block from a finished size of 2.75" up to 38.75".  

I did not measure mine to be sure what I ended up with but I started out with two 36" squares so I should have two 34.75 inch squares that I can add a border to and make a quick baby quilt.  I am thinking about adding some applique or embroidery in the center of the large block for extra umph.  

The triangles are super easy since the edges are already squared up so there is no question where to start sewing.  That has always been a problem for me when sewing triangles and this pattern fixes that.  Just love it.

Quiltmaker is one of the magazines I look at but don't buy just because I have stopped buying magazines since they just seem to stack up and then what do you do with them.  Now, the reason I found this pattern is that the magazine now has a digital version.  I am so happy.  I am going to have to subscribe.  I am hoping they also put Quick Quilts in digital format.  

Anyway, here are my two quilt tops for the evening.

No sewing yet today. Laundry from emptying the camper out for the season and general stuff. However, I have posted several pictures of quilts that are for sale. I will eventually get the paypal buttons up and working but as of now if you are interested in a quilt please just send me an email. I will accept paypal payments or cash of course if you are local. Whew the temps are going be very close to the freezing point around here overnight. What a way to usher fall in.
